Second Grade Success November 17

Monday Practice Reading Words to an adult
Tuesday Write each word 3 times
Wednesday Study for test
Thursday Write words in a sentence (7up sentences). You may use more than one spelling word in one sentence. Don’t forget to underline your words.
Friday Test will be given using ten words and two bonus words

No School November 26, 27, and 28
We will be progress monitoring all students every week. We are trying to earn a pizza party. If the class reaches 85% benchmark (68 words a minute), Mrs. Whitaker, will give us a pizza party. Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes each night.
Math- Students will have math homework each night this week in addition to the spelling homework. Our focus this week is to continue with addition strategies. We will be working on regrouping in addition and will begin subtraction. Students will be working on the following I Can statements this week.
I can use a number line to subtract.
I can subtract all or zero to find the difference.
I can use doubles facts to subtract.
I can use addition facts to subtract.
I can use subraction facts to help find the missing addend.


Reading- We have started our third theme Around Town: Neighborhood and Community. We will be reading a story about firefighters. The following are I can statements that Students will be working on this week.
I can: read words with vowel pairs ai, ay; read compound words.
I can: Identify the topic, main idea and supporting details in a story.
I can: read and identify and read this week’s high frequency words;
I can read and know the meaning of this week’s vocabulary words
I can identify three parts of a dictionary: beginning, middle, and end and can use these to find words quickly.


Writing- Students are beginning to organize their thoughts. Some students have started writing their short stories.
